Tip of the Week
Misstress Barbara

Mary Susan Littlepage

Back when DJ Misstress Barbara rocked the decks at Karma (R.I.P.) and Rednofive, she won over clubbers with what she called "drummy, funky, pumpin' techno," which she enhances with her animated presence behind the decks. Even though she has been playing more electro and minimal music lately, the dark-haired beauty from Montreal can still rock a party and synchronize you into her warm, energizing vibe, whether she is spinning from a sky-high, God-is-a-DJ booth or hoisting thumbs-up signals at eye level of partygoers in a gritty warehouse. "Come With Me," her new mixed CD that drops February 28, is way more mellow-sounding than her earlier, more pounding "Relentless Beats" mixed CDs, and features funky, trippy electro that is neither annoyingly over-polished nor too grimey. Her new CD also features two standout tracks that she made herself: the dark, brooding "I Love You" and "Eleven O Seven," which pleases with graceful keyboard chords and stompy beats.

Cupid's Ball 2 also features Avex Axiom, Mindbender, Motif8, Shaka 23, and Spin at Vision, 632 North Dearborn, (312)266-1944 on Feb. 11. $18 presale or $10 before 11pm with rsvp to purefuture.com. Wearing red will get you discounted admission and a shot of love potion. (2006-02-07)
