Buckner's now-patented country-folk excursions never get boring when
heard in person, and a night in the Schubas room could be all you need
to get through February. "Since," "Devotion and Doubt" and "Dents
and Shells" all rank as some of Buckner's best, but recently I've just
gotten more and more into "Bloomed," a delightful concoction that
equally features Buckner's brilliant guitar work and Southern-fused
vocal delivery. Live, he's been known to connect all the songs into one
huge acoustic opera, never breaking for applause or tuning, sometimes
seamlessly switching guitars without the audience's notice. While these
shows sometimes go on for more than two hours, a length that, let's face
it, nobody asks for, it's still as mesmerizing as you can stand.
Richard Buckner plays February 3 at Schubas, 3159 North Southport,
(773)525-2508.
