A Helping of Hilary
Clinton does Crobar

Mike Schramm

Protesters stand in the snowstorm on Saturday night. "A vote for Hillary," they chant, about thirty strong, "is a vote for war!" Across the street, where cops are cordoning off Crobar, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, who voted in favor of and still supports the war in Iraq, is scheduled to make an appearance at a fundraiser.

Inside, Democrats are dancing and drinking, and it's much warmer. Right on time at ten, DJ Biz Markie introduces "our next president," and after a congratulatory round of thank-yous from the "event committee," the former-first-lady-turned-New York Senator makes her appearance. She addresses the crowd's upturned faces from an upstairs balcony. "There are so many issues that we need to be concerned about," she tells the supporters in attendance, although war apparently isn't one of them. The deficit is out of control, though, and the health-care system is in bad shape. "Our country needs you," she tells the young people assembled at the club. "America has to show that we can come together to solve our problems."

Finally, she admits her love for both the gathered and Chicago to rousing applause, and then is whisked away to a glassed-in room where VIPs have paid $500 to meet her in person. After a little chanting of their own ("We love Hillary"), the music gets turned back up, and the clubgoers turn back to the bar and wait for the 2006 Senatorial re-election run. Any mention of the war, it seems, is left out in the cold.
