Tip of the Week
Eliot Lipp

Brad Knutson

For all intents and purposes, Eliot Lipp's music falls under the category of electro. However, this is not to be confused with 'electro-clash,' as Lipp doesn't create trendy music for fashion-conscious art-school kids. Armed with vintage gear and a genuine love for the genre, Lipp creates infectious instrumental jams that can stand up to both the scrutiny of a music critic and the exuberance of a packed dance floor. In addition to countless layers of electro synths, Lipp also utilizes a multitude of vintage breaks in his music, which has garnered him numerous comparisons to the likes of instrumental hip-hop heroes DJ Shadow, Madlib and RJD2. In fact, Lipp got his first big break thanks to one of the hottest underground producers in the business, Scott Herren, aka Prefuse 73, who released Lipp's debut LP on his Eastern Developments label. Now living in L.A., Lipp originally cut his electronic chops right here in Chicago, where he spent three years paying his dues on the local club circuit. His latest album, Tacoma Mockingbird, will be released in late January by local label Hefty Records.

At Your Formula Life with DJs Menergy (Jeffrey Sfire), and The Southside Hitmen Atomly and Johnny Love at Tini Martini, 2169 North Milwaukee, (773)269-2900 on November 12. Free before 11pm, $5 after. (2005-11-08)
