![]() Click for music events Tip of the Week Jack Fridays: Derrick Carter
"In the beginning there was Jack... and Jack had a groove...and Jack
declared let there be house...and house music was born." These are the
lyrics to one of house music's boldest anthems, which attempts to
explain the history of house--a history that the city of Chicago helped
define. So it makes perfect sense for Zentra, a club that's always had a
solid music policy, to designate its newest weekly party as "Jack
Fridays." Although hip-hop and other forms of electronica will round
out the vibe, the night promises to focus primarily on old school house,
bringing club-goers back to the kind of music played in sweaty
underground parties in Chicago when house was in its infancy more than
twenty years ago. To prove how serious it is about the new weekly party,
Zentra has called on a house heavyweight as one of its residents.
Headlining on Friday's launch is none other than Derrick Carter,
Chicago's house ambassador to the world. Carter will bring his signature
style of funky house mixed with jazz, disco and other elements to "Jack
Fridays" on a monthly basis. (I) With Diz, Hiroki, Sativa, Chris Santiago, Frank Solano, DJ Rampage,
Tony Cocco, Rick Torres, Ruckus, and Jon Elhardt at Zentra, 923 West
Weed, (312)787-0400 on September 30. (/I)
