Niffenegger returns big this season after her best-selling,
every-book-club-imaginable 2003 outing "The Time Traveler's Wife" with
both an art exhibit at Printworks and "The Three Incestuous Sisters,"
an illustrated fairy tale of Edward Gorey-like gloom about the lives of
three orphaned sisters in adulthood. One is beautiful, one is talented
and one is smart. One becomes pregnant, one feels a bond with the unborn
child and one darts off into delirious jealousy. The fantasy-gone-wrong
hits erotic notes in its unrelenting darkness, the ghostly images
haunting page by page with Niffenegger's undeniably crafty storytelling
and subtle wit. In the end, the sisters each live up to the promises
made in the early pages, as the characters are demons and shall continue
to be long after the book is closed. Now this is worthy of some
big screen adaptation. Audrey Niffenegger discusses "The Three Incestuous Sisters" on
September 23 at Women and Children First Bookstore, 5233 North Clark,
(773)769-9299, at 7:30pm. Free.
