Tip of the Week
Idlewild

Tom Lynch

An alternative to the lesser-known underdogs of the alt-rock scene that leans more toward rock than alt, Scotland's overly under-appreciated Idlewild delivers moody melodies against the backdrop of imaginative guitar lines and steady, U2-like bass, while the vocals tread somewhere between a clean-cut hipster chic and an early, accented Michael Stipe. "Warnings/Promises," the band's newest endeavor, doesn't quite hit the heart-mangling heights of Idlewild's earlier releases, but still rivals stiff competitors, especially when the band forges into heavier, thrash-like interludes instead of diving into unnecessary acoustic breakdowns. The record oozes purity throughout as a solid statue of pop rock, not quite radio-friendly, not quite victim of ultra-cool underground burial and not quite what you would want to hear when you're drunk and alone. It's an obnoxious mix of reaction, I know, but keep in mind that if Idlewild were from the United States, I have a sneaking suspicion the band would really fucking suck.

Idlewild plays September 22 at Metro, 3730 North Clark, (773)549-0203. (2005-09-20)
