![]() Tip of the Week The Portrait
Among the twelve gifted artists selected for this show from Catherine
Edelman's online gallery of emerging Chicago photographers, Gregory
Scott stands out with his relentlessly postmodern self-portraits. Scott
paints portraits of himself, puts them in a room where he poses with
them and then shoots the resulting scenes in black and white. In his
most genial image, a painted Scott kneels on a couch staring intently
and anxiously at an actual mirror affixed to the painted wall in which
the actual artist's outsized visage stares down at him with cool
scrutiny. If Scott's playful and paradoxical inversions of image and
reality seem too mind-boggling, look at Paul Clark's wildly elegant
abstractions of tangled tomato cages against pure white snowfalls, which
prove that austere straight modernism can match postmodern extravagance
in spinning around perception. "The Portrait" shows at Catherine Edelman Gallery, 300 West
Superior, (312)266-2350, through September 2.
