The Icelandic import will tell you they are an electronic soul band. But
in American parlance, this conjures up something a little more organic
than the cheeky industrial disco they bring. What hyphenation they
should bare could be debated heartily; they've boogied on the edge of
polysexual electronic weirdness since 1995. Still fronted by the gal
with the big ole voice, they will finally release another full-length
this fall. And if the single "Lust/Porn" is any indication, GusGus has
been seriously getting in touch with its inner minimal-techno child. A
dark, smooth analogue sound to be precise. Originally a nine-member
actor/filmmaker collective, fate distilled them to three in 2000. With
the addition of Earth (the gal with the big ole voice), they became the
syntheriffic group they are today. Earth will rep for the group Friday
along with "Hunk of Man," so it won't be the real-deal live show these
visual artists are legendary for, but a sweet spectacle of sexy, driving
electro no less. With Green Velvet playing and Johnny Love hosting in the main room,
John Grammatis on the lower level, and Shaka 23 and Kyle Szmurlo in the
Round Bar at Sound-Bar, 226 West Ontario, (312) 787-4480, on July 29.
