Le Tigre has a snotty little sister. And she does not give a fuck about
politics, music critics, eating better than Burger King or who sees her
gold lame camel toe. The Oakland foursome is Hunx and Junx (lanky, gay
beefcakes who favor little seventies running shorts) and Chunx and Funx
(two over-sexed, cheap-chic queens). Together, they are a petulant
electro-trash spectacle. Where electro-clash forged a sophisticated
earnesty/irony helix that elevated fashion to an adoring/mocking
hysteria, GT goes for bottom-feeder debauchery. "Kottonmouth BJ"
patiently explains, "You can't bone my mouth when my mouth is
bone-dry." While definitely taking cues from the sex-assured "Teaches
of Peaches" they come roundly back to big, smart sister Le Tigre by way
of B-52s-style organ, an electro-punk combination, and pouty yelling.
You can suss out L'Trimm's simplistic drum-machine beat and delivery,
too--but, to their credit, GT deftly carves out their own corner of the
continuing electro evolution. Their first album "Are you wigglin'?" is
out on the Kill Rock Stars label, but I can't imagine it does their
riotous stage show any kind of justice. Gravy Train!!!! plays the Open End Gallery, 2000 West Fulton,
(773)276-3600, on July 22.
