The Lord Weird Slough Feg

Dave Chamberlain

An underground metal act from San Francisco that's quickly rising from the subterranean scene to prominence, Slough Feg--aka The Lord Weird Slough Feg--runs a gamut of wacky extremes. The band's latest, "Atavism," kicks off with "Robustus," a forty-second slab of guitar power that resembles thrash of yore. But that song segues into a more typical Slough Feg effort, "I Will Kill You/You Will Die," a bizarre virtuoso metal track that at once recalls the persona of Judas Priest and the inexplicable insanity of San Fran legend Zolar X. Lead singer Mike Scalzi lends a unique slant to the whole deal, a voice that's neither too high nor low, and sounds imbued with the same goofball seriousness that Jello Biafra might have exhibited were he behind the microphone of a metal band. Slough Feg, which takes its name from a demon of Irish mythology, has actually kicked around SF for fifteen years. But this is the band's moment; fifteen years ago, no one was ready to hear heavy metal charged by such clinical strangeness.

Slough Feg plays July 12 at the Double Door, 1572 North Milwaukee, (773)489-3160. (2005-07-05)

With alternating male-female vocals, a pairing of disco and aggressive rock that outdoes Electric Six and a stage show to justify the band's name, Bang! Bang! seems to be one of Chicago's most promising bands

Tip of the Week
It's really a give-and-take situation: The Fucking Champs, who haven't dropped by Chicago in their purest form for far too long, play a concert; unfortunately, that doesn't mean there's a new record in tow

The lads who bring us Horizontal Action--a magazine that features gritty rock `n' roll profiles and reviews alongside a smattering of hardcore pornography--again aim their guns at the annual Blackout event, so named because of the effect alcohol tends to have on the magazine's publishers and friends during this three-day event
