Of course the creator of cult sitcom "Freaks and Geeks" was a virgin
till 24. The American public, at least the public that devoted its
collective life to the short-lived TV series, wouldn't have it any other
way. In "Superstud: Or, How I Became a 24-Year-Old Virgin," Feig
narrates his own adolescent sex life, or rather lack thereof, with deft
humor and self-reflection, through endless roads of curious masturbation
(which nearly leads to paralysis), unsuccessful attempts at wooing love
interests and eventually, yes, the grand slam. Feig's self-professed
geekdom drives his stories with expressive integrity; he's not a cool
guy into Weezer who's intrigued by geek society, nor a cool chick with
pink hair donning an "I [heart] Geeks" T-shirt--Feig's the real deal,
down to his obsession with REO Speedwagon (which, if you were "cool,"
you simply called REO). "Superstud" is a nostalgic look at
awkwardness, high-school class stature, and weird make-out sessions.
What Feig lacks in profundity he makes up for in pure, wholehearted
entertainment.
