The Millennium Park Bike Station cements Chicago's place as a
bike-friendly city. On-site repairs, secured parking and valet service
are a Lance Armstrong fantasy turned reality. Miles of scenic lakefront
paths and bike lanes seal the deal--nothing gets you to the store, the
beach or the bar faster than a bike.
"Every bike could be of use to someone, somewhere, sometime," said
Ezra L. Hozinsky of Rapid Transit, a popular Chicago bike shop. But
bikers beware--styles, features and prices span the rainbow and can
leave you spinning your wheels. Here are a few tips to shift you into
gear:
What to look for:
Bike Size: You should be able to almost straighten your leg
when seated
Special features: "Terrain" is minimal in Chicago--pass on
the elaborate shock systems. Basic cruisers can handle city potholes.
Weight: Consider your storage options. If you live in a
walkup, opt for a model you can comfortably lift.
Nightlights: Reflectors and lights are a must for night
riding.
Accessories: Indulge in upgraded seats and handlebars for
maximum comfort.
Where to go: If comfort and fit are primary concerns, head to
a full-service shop like Rapid Transit. Warning: average prices where
the pros shop hover around the $350 mark. If money is a motivating
factor, shop the Working Bikes Cooperative, a nonprofit organization
that rehabs used bikes. Target also sells good quality Schwinn models
for under $150. Rapid Transit Cycle Shop: 1900 W. North, (773)227-2288
Working Bikes Cooperative: 1125 S. Western, (312)421-5048
Target: 2656 N. Elston, (773)252-1994, 2939 W. Addison,
(773)604-7680, 1154 S. Clark, (312)212-6300
