![]() Tip of the Week Significant Works Within Reach
In an act of photographic justice, collector Jim Klein has been given a
free hand to fill the gallery walls with photo-works that reflect his
taste, which runs the gamut from contemporary postmodern
experimentalists to straight shooters. Including strong images by such
luminaries as Lee Friedlander, Alfredo Jaar, Joel Meyerowitz and Nic
Nicosia, the show as a whole lacks a dominant theme, but has a bias
betraying humanist social concern. On account of their theme and their
overwhelming brutal grandeur, Meyorowitz's color shots of the
devastation left in the wake of 9/11 dominate the other images which,
however ingenious, elegant and witty they are, cannot rise to the
sentiment of sublime seriousness evoked by the sight, against a black
sky, of a garishly illuminated skyscraper with blasted windows, in one
of which the stars and strips are threaded through the panes in coils of
contorted agony. "Significant Works Within Reach" shows at Schneider Gallery, 230
West Superior, (312)988-4033. Through July 23.
