Beach-blanket roulette
How to buy a swimsuit

Joanna Topor

Unless you've made the ab-lounge a 9-to-5 priority, you're in the same camp as the rest of us now that swimsuit season is here: dreading the fluorescent-lit department-store fitting room. Beach duds are a must, but those lights...

Unfortunately closing your eyes isn't an option, but taking control of your fear is. A few things to consider before throwing yourself at the swimsuit rack: First, be realistic--you might not be able to pull off super-low-rise bottoms, but that doesn't mean you can't make this season's vibrant prints work for you. Second, think fabric--knits are cute and don't cut into your skin the way spandex does, but there's a reason we don't go swimming in our sweaters. And finally, consider mix-and-match separates--none of us are a perfect size 6 from head to toe.

Some helpful hints to play up your best beach assets:

Everyone: Avoid unsightly, spandex-induced skin pinching. Consider bottoms that tie at the side.

Small chest: Think high neckline or gathered material for that extra oomph.

Big chest: Make sure you have adequate support, especially on the sides. Try a sexy halter.

Short torso: Go for lower-cut bottoms in solid colors like hip-hugger boy shorts.

Long torso: Add curves by using patterns to your advantage, draw attention to your waist and hips with vertical lines.

Tummy conscious: Try a tankini--the added fabric will provide just enough coverage to ease your mind. Also, embrace the one-piece. These little ditties have come a long way, with plunging back-lines and metallic accents--they're not your mother's swimsuit.
