![]() Tip of the Week Temporary Allegiances
Visitors to Gallery 400 at the University of Illinois will notice a new
addition to the outside plaza: a flagpole. A project by Philip Von
Zweck, the pole has been erected to fly flags at one-week intervals from
any and all artists interested in signing up. According to the project's
web site at www.temporaryallegiance.org (where you can also sign up to
make a flag), use of the pole currently stands fully booked through
October. Also according to the web site, the purpose of the flag project
is to "to provide the community with a democratized space that fosters
expression free of the veil of anonymity." Who knew anonymity was such a
problem? In any case, a few stipulations apply: artists must allow
posting of their name at the base of the pole "and their phone number or
email address to be available for visitors requesting contact
information from the gallery staff." So if you have a comment you can
dial them directly. First on the pole is Oli Watt, whose flag stays up
through June 10. "Temporary Allegiances" shows at Gallery 400 at UIC, 1240 West
Harrison, (312)996-6114. Through July 1.
