Ever since I got mesmerized by an Eddie Halliwell Mixmag covermount CD,
I've cleared my decks to catch his Chicago appearances. Halliwell spins
a hard brand of UK-style house music, but his genius is most apparent in
his live sets. Give the man a laptop, a set of decks, and some tunes,
and he'll create a monster. His personal energy is infectious--I once
watched him crawl out on the edge of the DJ booth at Vision, like a
madman on the ledge of a skyscraper, to cheer and exhort the crowd into
an energetic frenzy. He''s just been given a residency on Britain's
ubiquitous BBC Radio 1, and if his first show is any indication, he's
still, as he likes to say, "firing it up." Halliwelll alone is worth a
Jackson or two, but add in fellow rising star (and already star
producer) James Holden, and you have a night that might just make
Chicago clubbing history. Or infamy. James Holden and Eddie Halliwell spin Godskitchen at Vision, 637
North Dearborn, on May 14.
