What happens when four hip young transgender writers hit the road
together to tell their stories? You get a caravan of sexual artistry,
marked by talent for poetry, essays and fiction. Tennessee Jones
headlines the tour--his "Deliver Me from Nowhere" adventures through
the gender confusion of Middle America and is the best collection of
shorts to use Springsteen's "Nebraska" as its foundation. It's a book
of shadows that takes the reader to dusty brown places, not unlike an
imagined Nebraska roadside just before sunrise. There's a danger there,
just as in Springsteen's folksy record, where all the characters are not
always what they seem, and the stories run together with a warm vinyl
soundtrack. A short read, Jones' "Deliver Me from Nowhere" stands out
as one of the more original books of the still young year. Also
appearing: "Choir Boy" author Charlie Anders, "The Urban Hermitt"
zine author Andre Hewitt and "The Body of Loss" author Emil Heiple.
The Cross Gender Caravan stops on May 6 at Quimby's, 1854 W. North,
(773)342-0910, at 7pm. Free.
