![]() Tip of the Week Terrence Karpowicz
As we approach the date of the annual Navy Pier Walk, Terrence
Karpowicz, a co-founder of that annual outdoor sculpture exhibition,
opens a survey of his own sculptural work, a career spanning some 22
years. Sixty pieces will be available for viewing, an impressive
collection that includes traditional and kinetic work in granite,
bronze, timber and steel. Karpowicz's use of disparate materials to
create a visual push-and-pull between them will provide ample
opportunity for viewers to experience the perceptual trick that implies
movement in dead matter that has long served as the basis of the
artist's practice. His ability to render them at the joints where these
materials are combined, which often seems to render even the heaviest of
such materials weightless, deserves the scrutiny of a still-elusive
larger audience. Terrence Karpowicz shows at the Illinois Institute of Technology
Kemper Room Art Gallery, In the Paul D. Gavin Library, 35 West 33rd
Street, (312)567-3000. Through September 9.
