East coast writer Alice Hoffman has created a fantasy. The acclaimed
storyteller, who has more than fifteen novels under her belt, delivers
"The Ice Queen," a cinematic, dreamlike story of a woman whose life
changes drastically after she's struck by lightning. She searches for
other survivors to explain how her body feels--frozen in ice--so she can
grasp understanding. This leads her to Lazarus, a man who's pronounced
dead only to rise minutes later, and Hoffman's mystery begins. The
inevitable love twist aside, "The Ice Queen" adeptly asks more
questions than it offers answers, but like most things, lightning can be
tricky. Alice Hoffman discusses "The Ice Queen" on April 6 at Barnes &
Noble, 55 Old Orchard Drive, Skokie, (847)676-2230, at 7:30pm. Free.
