Rebel rebel, your face is a mess. Not too long ago, wearing lipstick in
Iran was a punishable crime--now it's an act of revolt. In Azadeh
Moaveni's new memoir "Lipstick Jihad," the author, who grew up in San
Jose, tells her coming-of-age story as an Iranian in America, with
household making way for Madonna once she left for school. After
college, she traveled to Iran as a journalist and the cultural change
shocked her as she encountered a new group of young citizens boldly
working for change, revolutionaries speaking against an unwanted regime.
What was once impossible turned into nights of rebellion. Moaveni gives
the reader a look inside the underbelly of Iran with complexity and
careful dissection, all while comparing her two personal cultures, her
east and her west. Azadeh Moaveni reads from "Lipstick Jihad" on March 9 at Women and
Children First Bookstore, 5233 North Clark, (773)769-9299, at 7pm.
Free.
