Tip of the Week
Brazilian Girls

Tom Lynch

The New York clan's self-titled debut record, recently released on Verve Forecast, lustfully captures the feeling of black-and-white, with jazzy-smoke rhythms, occasional dance beats, liquor-sippin' groove, and songs sung in five different languages. The Girls (in actuality, there's only one woman, the rest are men indeed, and they're not Brazilian) bring electro-pop to the surface when they're at their best, with singer Sabina Sciubba keeping the songs together with her smooth but forceful voice. She sounds like Bjork--that's obvious and impossible to not mention--but with Bjork, at least at this point, we know what's coming, and with Sciubba anything can happen as she, yes, seduces with multilingual dance vox. The band began while the four members lived in New York and started playing around with sound together at club Nublu, which turned into a weekly residency. A bit Latin, total Euro, some nightclub, and all movement, Brazilian Girls' debut is kind of unforgettable.

The Brazilian Girls play February 19 at the Metro, 3730 North Clark, (773)549-0203.
