Tip of the Week
Greenskeepers

Tom Lynch

James Curd and Nick Maurer's "Lotion" video, in which they visually remix crazed "Silence of the Lambs" serial killer Buffalo Bill footage over Maurer's "It puts the lotion on its skin, or else it gets the hose again," spread like wildfire over the Internet, faster than Lecter could go off to eat Dr. Chilton. The song, which boasts a seriously reminiscent early nineties alt-rock guitar riff, has so many undeniable pop qualities itself, which is why it works so well even without its accompanying video as the first single off of "Pleetch" (Om Records), Chicago-based Greenskeepers' newest record. Curd and Maurer are dead-set on fun as they weave funk and soul in and out of the album's fifteen songs, coupled with surefire dance beats and guest vocals from Diz, jazzman Stine Kinck, Colette, and others. And then there's the rock. Heavy guitars lead some of the record's most mighty tracks, bringing a new edge to the duo. "Filipino Phil" rips through as lovable, danceable pop; and "Man in the House" explodes into a candy Cars chorus, synth and all. Couple that with Greenskeepers' humor and seventies influences, and "Pleetch" could be that one-of-a-kind fun.

Greenskeepers plays with a full band, along with a James Curd DJ set, at Zentra, 923 West Weed, on January 20.
