![]() Tip of the Week Exposure
Among the twenty-two photographers in this dense show celebrating the
various modernist genres, the standout artists deploy their
straight-shooting talents to highlight unfamiliarity. The most
compelling images are Phyllis Gottlieb's intimate and slightly muted
color street scenes taken in Morocco and Cuba that bring those places
together and distance them from us. Defying the conventions of travel
photography, Gottlieb gets close in and jams her subjects into the
frame, as when she shows us a battered old sedan wedging a man against a
building facade on a narrow Havana street. Working expertly in color
with a simple pinhole camera, Dana Day turns the trick of preserving
sufficient detail within distortion to make us feel that her cityscapes
of Amsterdam are what we might see if we were pleasantly stoned. "Exposure" shows at Landmark Arts, 841 West Randolph,
(312)491-1900, through February 11.
