![]() Tip of the Week Magdalena Correa
For postmodern photographer Magdalena Correa, Barcelona's new
ultra-modernist World Trade Center is an opportunity to evoke the
complex emotions that we experience in the antiseptic and alienating
temples of commerce when we attend to the coarse and humble details that
disturb their slick perfection. The most successful of Correa's
large-format black-and-white images take advantage of the defiantly
angular architecture of the building to frame more accessible subjects
like a simple table surrounded by chairs or a brightly illuminated
cityscape that subverts any thought that we have vaulted into
globalization unburdened of our less-than-streamlined past. Correa's
deep visual intelligence achieves the rare feat of transiting from
concept to feeling; she teaches us that we can be at home in the
technological society if we are careful to look for reminders of our
disordered embodied nature. Magdalena Correa shows at Instituto Cervantes, 875 North Michigan,
Suite 2940, (312)335-1996, through January 22.
