DVD Tips
Laura Dern; Maria Full of Grace; Collateral/The Door in the Floor; Mary Poppins

Laura Dern
As awards season gets frantic, two reissues highlight Laura Dern, whose fierce, fearless performance as a disaffected housewife and mother in John Curran's filming of stories by Andre Dubus, "We Don't Live Here Anymore," will surely be short-listed. (Curran's film is out this week as well.) From 1986, Joyce Chopra's "Smooth Talk" showcases a gawky, mercurial teen Dern in a coming-of-age story; David Lynch's gruesome "Wild at Heart" (1990) puts her out on a different limb.

Maria Full of Grace
Joshua Marston's too-little-seen Spanish-language "Maria Full of Grace," which was developed by the Sundance Institute and debuted there in 2004, is due this week as well, and its central performance by Catalina Sandino Moreno as a young Colombia woman tempted into the drug trade, is deeply affecting, and will likely be lauded.

Collateral/The Door in the Floor
Michael Mann's "Collateral," one of the more visually inventive big-budget pictures of the year should be equally striking on DVD; the quiet graces of Tod Williams' "The Door in the Floor" seem forgotten in the months since its release, but its many virtues include a ripe performance by Jeff Bridges as an artist who--gosh!--is a self-knowing, self-mocking sonofabitch.

Mary Poppins
And for a nostalgic bite of supercalifragilisticexpialidocious eye candy, Disney's reissuing an eye-poppingly restored "Mary Poppins" (1964) just in time for the holidays, with all manner of extras featuring the aged principals of the production.

All titles are released Tuesday.
