12x12: New Artists, New Work: Ken Fandell

Michael Workman

One of those rare breeds of artists whose work equals his art-world savvy, Fandell revels in the quip, the one-liner and the sprawling aesthetic vision all at once. It's a compliment to his range that Fandell, who has incorporated the individual perspective so casually, manages to make the object of that vision, whether open sky or sandy beach, a matter of subjective experience. This balance of absolute and particular's no small feat and always makes this artist's work compelling. His show at the MCA includes previously exhibited photomontages of sky rearranged within particular moments of sky-watching--moments of stargazing and cloud-watching that he has accumulated into singular instances of a seeming omniscient composition. A video included in the show compiles each individual photograph used to make the final images, maintaining the individualism that Fandell has long staunchly and, often with great humor, successfully defended.

"12x12: New Artists, New Work: Ken Fandell" shows at the Museum of Contemporary Art, 220 East Chicago Avenue, (312)280-2660. Through January 31.
