Zinesters team up to create a giant

Tom Lynch

The Wicker Park space, High School, starts to get crowded with artists and writers, pens and markers in hand, each armed with 4.25" x 5.5" white cards.

The READ Zine Making Party #5--where local writers and artists gather to create a giant zine in one night--gets underway, each creator huddled off in a corner or against a wall, diligently scribbling at his or her card. Each card will become a page in the new zine, evidence of participation in an event that proclaims "Whatever your political leanings, right brain or left, art or science, mathematical, or grammatical, we want your talents on paper. This event is a celebration of free speech and freedom of press."

"There are like, many supplies," says Bradley Adita, one of the event's organizers, to the illustrators scattered on the floor. A lone typewriter, boxes of pop-culture-savvy magazines (think Olsen Twin headlines), and colored markers rest in the middle of the floor, all at the participants' disposal. Adita walks around the room and hands out brown boards for support, joking, "You know, if you guys like hard surfaces." A small black dog wanders around and yelps at each person who walks in the door. The selling or trading of zines is encouraged, but no one takes advantage of it except Billy, who dumps a stack of his on the front table. Adita makes an announcement that they're available, but everyone keeps their eyes on their personal page.
