The editors of "The Encyclopedia of Chicago," the new A-Z reference book
detailing the history of everything Chicago, appear to discuss
their process of compiling information that spans nearly two centuries.
From "Abolitionism" to "Zenith Radio Corp.," the editors, with the help
of eight pages of contributors, the Newberry Library and the Chicago
Historical Society, mapped out a mammoth book of text, photos and maps,
giving us a thick and powerful view of our city's past. At 1,117 pages,
the book weighs nearly ten pounds, and it may take a while to sink your
teeth into. But once you read the history of "The Bozo Show," which is
on the same page as an evaluation of Chicago boxing, it's hard to let
go. Informative even if daunting, the encyclopedia would make a perfect
coffee-table book, just as long as the table has really strong legs. The editors of "The Encyclopedia of Chicago" discuss their work at
Borders Bookstore, 830 North Michigan, (312)573-0564, on November 11, at
7pm. Free.
