In an intelligent and inventive use of the computer, Michael McGuire expands his color photos of Chicago's El tracks into panoramic visions by seaming them together in a row, bringing out their elegant power and design, and thoroughly confusing our sense of perspective. Doug Birkenheuer, the other contrarian photographer among the seven talented contributors here, turns the sculptural nude on its head by placing the subjects of his black-and-white studies into contorted and bizarre positions, disturbing our expectations of classical equanimity. The other bodies of work are provided by straight shooters who go for emotion rather than conceptual and perceptual play. Marc Sirinsky's sepia-toned and muted prints are the most evocative, transmuting ordinary scenes into faded memory images that flash vainly with sparks of light delusively promising renewed life.
