Tip of the Week
Scott Treleaven

Michael Workman

Toronto artist Scott Treleaven's fascination with nihilism holds a poisonous attraction, uneasy to resist. His shirtless, dirty-faced and boney young men in "skulls + flowers" prance beneath a tableaux of red flowers, holding aloft a pile of yawning skulls. As we look, we see a celebration that blossoms with the easy gratification of youthful pride. A goat peers out from its perch at their feet. Glorifying the outcast and the culturally oppressed, Treleaven indulges in the depiction of back-alley mythologies framed by cultural languages developed in a visual melting pot borrowing equally from Moreau and Burroughs. This fringe perspective never falters in his papers on canvas or collages, and the gallery will also screen Treleaven's film, "THE SALiVATION ARMY," a 2002 best-of Village Voice pick that traces the rise and fall of a band of young gay radicals.

Scott Treleaven shows at Kavi Gupta Gallery, 835 West Washington, (312)432-0708. OPENING RECEPTION: October 29, 6-9pm. Through Dec 4.
