The annual festival of banned and challenged literature hits Chicago for
the twenty-second time this week, to bring light to the bizarre and
shortsighted requests the ALA Office for Intellectual Freedom receives
asking to pull works like "A Raisin in the Sun" and "To Kill a
Mockingbird" from libraries and schools. The Newberry Library presents
bestselling author Sara Paretsky, "Sylvia" comic creator Nicole
Hollander, author and professional-ghost-hunter Richard Crowe and poet
Haki Madhubuti--each will read from their favorite "banned" book. Plus,
the read-out features an open mic for audience members to defend and
share their preferred pieces of blacklisted lit. And, in addition to the
reading and the open free-for-all, the ALA President delivers a lecture
entitled "Libraries and Free Speech," at 11am. So get yourself out there
and support our right to read and write. The Banned Books Read-Out is held on October 2 in Washington Square
Park, 901 North Clark, at 12:30pm. Free.
