![]() Tip of the Week African Art: The Diaspora and Beyond
This week kicks off Chicago Artist's Month, a city-sponsored program
working to promote interest in the arts by inviting Chicagoans to
venture outside their neighborhoods and comfort zones to view work by
city artists. This year's theme, "Art Connects," states the intended
outcome of the program, and there's perhaps no better way of expressing
that than through a visit to the South Side. "African Art: The Diaspora
and Beyond" brings together the work of 39 African-American artists and
honors Jeff Donaldson for his work with the Black Arts Movement. While
Chicago houses a significant population of black artists, only a few
local galleries showcase their work, a fact that makes this an important
stop on any tour of the city's creative heart. "African Art: The Diaspora and Beyond" shows at the South Shore
Cultural Center, 7059 South South Shore Drive, (773)791-7003. Through
November 13.
