Clubs Tip of the Week
Danny Howells

Al de Leon

You don't become the featured DJ at the hottest party at Miami's Winter Music Conference unless you're something special, but Danny Howells happens to qualify.

Over the past few years, his "Made in B.E.D" party has been the talk of the conference, the dance-music industry's annual get-together. At the 2004 installment of "Made," the crowd at the door swelled into a bottleneck, as eager fans and industry types vied for a chance to make it into the relatively small club to hear one of the world's best DJs. Don't believe the hype? Several dance-music heavyweights--from Carl Cox to Deep Dish--were reportedly in the house to check out Howells' set, which is a testament to a DJ known for taking club-goers on a hypnotic ride through his self-described blend of "deepsexyfuturistictechfunkhouse." It's not a copout description--Howells likes to mix it up, and no one blends genres and builds anticipation on the dancefloor quite as effortlessly. Luckily for Chicago, Sound-Bar is several times the size of B.E.D. (with about half the attitude), so everyone should have the opportunity to enjoy one of the scene's true innovators.

Danny Howells spins at Sound-Bar, 226 West Ontario, (312)787-4480, on September 16. (2004-09-14)
