![]() Tip of the Week Dogmatic Gallery
Even intransigent irrational beliefs have a limit, if the announced
closing of Pilsen's anti-institutional venture known as Dogmatic
Gallery serves as any guide. As part of its last hurrah, the program
marking the rundown to the end of the space as patrons know it (there
has been discussion of opening this apartment gallery as a for-profit
space, though plans remain murky) includes the far-fetched and
thoroughly marvelous "Mt. Baldy Expedition" project by James Barry and
Hui-Min Tsen. A "voyage of exploration," Chicago artists/adventurers
James Barry and Hui-min Tsen are building a dinghy from scratch to sail
Lake Michigan to Mt. Baldy, "the once largest live sand mountain in the
world, where they will document its movement and collect other pertinent
data." In conjunction with the effort, Barry and Tsen have been building
a Mt. Baldy Expedition flag, acquiring navigational tools and producing
documents relevant to their journey, including a series of
black-and-white "exploratory photographs" of water and sky. Originally
the pair had planned to launch this month, "but we grossly
underestimated what was involved" says Barry. Instead, plans now are to
embark this time next summer. Meanwhile, offices for the two have
recently been donated by Dogmatic and their progress can be monitored on
their blogsite at http://mtbaldyexpedition.blogs.com. "The Mt. Baldy Expedition" shows at Dogmatic Gallery, 1822 South
Des Plaines, (312)492-6698, through August 31.
