D'Erasmo's "A Seahorse Year," a poignant follow-up to her beloved and
acclaimed "Tea," documents the small Northern California world of a gay
man, a lesbian couple, and the mentally troubled Christopher, an
adolescent son to the three of them. After Christopher vanishes into the
nearby woods, the three of them begin their search for truth. The calm
poetics of D'Erasmo's writing gives wheels to a story that passes by
effortlessly, with impressive smoothness and complex care. The New York
writer, who has written for the New York Times and the Village Voice,
builds enormous tension between her characters--the reader can feel it
from the pages. The drama is appropriate: a gut-shot examination of
family bonds. She prefaces the work with a quote from PJ Harvey: "My
love will stay till the riverbed run dry." So will this book. Stacey D'Erasmo reads from "A Seahorse Year" on July 27 at Women and
Children First Bookstore, 5233 N. Clark, (773) 769-9299, at 7:30pm.
