![]() Tip of the Week Gutted
It's not everyday that a future gut rehab becomes the site of an art
event. But for a single night this Saturday, a United States/UK
collaborative group named "Seep" moves into the onetime location of DIX
Art Mix. Seep's stated mission is to "instigate and promote temporal,
site-specific, and non-gallery based art forms." Their strategy for
doing so involves taking over a building, loading it with Chicago-based
performers such as Deva Eveland and Richard Curtis, and limiting the
event to one evening. Since performance was originally conceived in
opposition to Abstract Expressionism, much sought after in many Chicago
galleries, form and content seem well aligned here. Then again, also
among the participants are Carianacarianne, a recent exhibitor in the
MCA's "12x12: New Works/New Artists" series--in taking her on, maybe
Seep figured Chicago galleries and their institutional equivalents
aren't all bad. "Gutted" shows at 1833 North Leavitt, (773)227-8834, on July 17 from
7-11pm.
