Tip of the Week
Pedro the Lion

Tom Lynch

Pedro the Lion's contributions to the indie scene walk a thin line between art and emotional masturbation, generally falling to the art side of the spectrum. Vocalist/guitarist David Bazan's knack of penning articulate, thoughtful and downright interesting concept albums that question our beloved culture remain unrivaled by contemporary songwriters--he balances crimson-red anger and devastating melancholy, even Steven. On stage, Bazan quietly mumbles while speaking, a modest, humble representation of what honest artists should be like. The new record, "Achilles Heel" (Jade Tree), doesn't quite match the physical force of the band's previous three records, but it cripples most of what has come out this year. It's softer, less aggressive, with less buzz distortion and shouting. Instead, Bazan fills the bowl with gentle, smooth vocals that climb high and dig low. Maybe he's not pissed off at backstabbers and cheating husbands anymore, as he was on the last few albums. Or maybe he's just too sad to care.

Pedro the Lion plays June 28-29 at the Abbey Pub, 3420 West Grace, (773)529-6116.

Something tells me there isn't much keeping this band from being an all out gross-fest of hippie sweat, sandals and psychedelic pedals, but for the time being, the indie pop works
