Tip of the Week
DePaul's juried art exhibition

Michael Weinstein

Of the ten young photographers in this juried show, curated by Annette Ferrara of TenByTen magazine, Diana Rose delivers the most conceptually tight and coherent work in her black-and-white "Travel and Apathy" series. The series features an unkempt and bearded male subject sitting outdoors in an easy chair covered with white cloth at various tourist attractions like zoos and botanical gardens. Rose's mode is the model of a major slacker, taking studied indifference so far that it seems to turn into the real thing. As he sits with his back to a stately elephant with noble bearing, he becomes the quintessence of collapsed and self-enclosed torpor. For a shot of energy to shake you out of the doldrums, check out Michael Bingaman's wild digital collage of the urban industrial wilderness crisscrossed by power lines.

The student juried art exhibition takes place at the DePaul University Art Gallery, 2350 North Kenmore, (773)325-7506, through July 3.
