Not everyone in America had the displeasure of moving to a new
neighborhood at 12 years old--most adolescents grew up in the same
house. Not Emma Harris, however, McCandless' hero in her debut novel,
"Grosse Pointe Girl," which follows the misadventures of an archetypal
suburban girl from sixth grade to her high-school reunion. Beginning in
the mid-eighties and finishing in the present, McCandless' bittersweet
ode to social awkwardness investigates the things that really matter:
lip-gloss application, the discomfort of jelly shoes, alcohol and, of
course, sex and prom. Threaded throughout the narrative are
illustrations by DC Comics' Christine Norrie, which look like a lot like
the drawings found in every teen-book series of the time. This novel is
for those who miss high school and Debbie Gibson equally, but won't
admit to either.
Sarah Grace McCandless reads from "Grosse Pointe Girl" on June 17 at
Barbara's Bookstore, 1218 South Halsted, (312)413-2665, at 7:30pm. Free.
