![]() Tip of the Week Total Gym
Maybe it's the broken-lined masks with their yawning nose, mouth and
eye-holes that makes this show intriguing. It's got a provocative name,
too: "Primal Secrets." Woo. Sounds ominous. Vaguely threatening. Will
the skeletons come spilling out of the closet? If they don't, there'll
still be the birdhouses converted into speakers for audio art, a video
called "Pocket Monster" based on an episode of Pokemon and the
promised spiral-shaped installation made from masking tape that
gallerists Elizabeth Cline and Michael Coleman describe as representing
the "economic secret logic of the Golden Mean." Who wouldn't want to
check that out? But, getting back to those masks: local art group Total
Gym has suggested that visitors print them out from the West Town
neighborhood's Foundation Gallery website at www.foundation-gallery.org<
/a> and wear them to the show's opening night. It's a tactic sure to
win over those with a flair for a little harmless social melodrama.
Total Gym, "Primal Secrets" shows at Foundation Gallery, 700 North
Carpenter, (312)860-0740, through June 18.
