This April Fool's, The Poetry Center of Chicago presents a reading by
the undeniably prolific word maestro Mark Strand. His most recent
collection of poems, 1998's "Blizzard of One," won him the Pulitzer
Prize, the last possible achievement the man could possibly accomplish
in poetry, since he's already served as Poet Laureate of the United
States, has edited a countless number of poetry journals and has been
handed multiple grants and awards over the years. Strand, who now
teaches in the Committee on Social Thought at the University of Chicago,
writes with unparalleled grace--he lingers in his syllables and somber
tones like he's wading in water. Not many poets can pull off the line
"And you will have none of it because already I am beginning again
without anything," like Strand does in his piece, "Giving Myself Up."
Mark Strand reads from his work on April 1 at 7pm at Metro, 3730 North
Clark, (773)549-0202.
