*Elephant
(2003, USA) Directed by Gus van Sant. "Elephant" is about
inexplicable beauty and the fragility of each breath as it is taken.
It's autumn. Leaves are falling. The green lawns are strewn with
autumn's rustling bursts of color: leaves turn most brilliant just as
they are dying. We follow almost a dozen students at a suburban high
school, through classrooms, the library, cafeteria, the grassy quad,
locker rooms. Faces become landscape. Seemingly inconsequential actions
are repeated from multiple points of view. The frame is boxy, shot in
the 4:3 ratio of a television screen or videogames; the 16mm box of
Frederick Wiseman's black-and-white documentary classic, "High School:
or, as Van Sant has pointed out, the format of every badly imagined,
fear-inducing instructional film shown to students into the 1980s. And?
Violence comes to even the blameless. 81m. $4. DOC Films (773)702-8575,

*Straightman
(2000, Chicago) Directed by Ben Berkowitz. A rough-hewn, sometimes
indelicately shot, from-the-heart story about male friendship. Working
in a style derived from backgrounds in acting and improvisation,
director/co-producer/co-writer/co-star Berkowitz and
co-producer/co-writer/star Ben Redgrave play roommates with cluttered
lives. David (Berkowitz) overweight, bearded and furry, manages a comedy
club with comics from an off-brand hell, and pursues, with clumsy
aplomb, a succession of flings with women who pass through the club.
Jack (Redgrave) works construction jobs, scowling at the world and his
live-in girlfriend from behind a heavy handlebar mustache. A few small
tremors in their lives, and the pair become roommates. David is manic;
Jack is unhappy: while David thinks Jack is straight, he is, in fact,
pursuing sex with strangers in stairwells and men's rooms across
Chicago. Eventually, Jack confronts the reality of his life, and the
performances--searching, seething--and the writing of the scenes--never
judgmental, only descriptive--make for a modestly scaled film that has
remarkable nuance and texture. It's a Chicago film through and through,
and the people on screen? They're probably your friends. $5. Chicago

*Goodbye South, Goodbye
(Nanguo Zaijian, Nanguo) (1996, Taiwan) Directed by Hou Hsiao-Hsien.
Since the end of martial law in 1987, Taiwanese cinema has produced a
number of fascinating directors, and Hou is probably the best. On this
go-round, his form--extended takes with actors in darkness or facing
away from the camera, with the camera snatching a moment of revelation
at the end of the shot--lapses into obscurity. The scrap of story about
a small band of criminals--gamblers who gamble, fight, eat, and devise
bizarre scams involving stud hogs--seems at odds with Hou's
oppressively patient, yet vibrant visuals. Hou uses industrial rock
music to accompany several lusciously shot driving sequences and there
are sophisticated color schemes throughout. Hou may be becoming
Taiwan's Michael Mann ("Taipei Vice"?); not necessarily a bad thing.
