![]() Tip of the Week Fiona Macdonald
A collector strolls past a wall, gazing at a canvas hung there. A
gallerist registers his pause, awaiting the end of a pause long enough
to indicate a saleable interest. Artists dote neurotically on their
gallerists, desperate for recognition. A flood of critics swim upstream
against a media whirlpool. Careers are made and broken in Fiona
Macdonald's "Museum Emotions," a video broken into ten ten-minute
clips depicting art world machinations at work. Part of Columbia's
"Artists in Production" series curated by Debra Parr, this exhibit
attempts to define the role of artists in culture. Also on display will
be Macdonald's portraits of artists posing with their finished art.
Taken all together, her body of work represents an attempt to penetrate
the economic and social fabric of an art world that may or may not
respond with as much attentive as she has lavished on it. Fiona Macdonald, "Artists In Production" shows at A+D Gallery,
72 E. 11th Street, (312)344-6156, through April 24.
