![]() Tip of the Week Fast Track: Raceday 2003
To commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the Pinewood Derby, pioneered
in 1953 by the Manhattan Beach Cub Scouts leader Don Murphy, Chicago
artist John Wanzel has organized "Fast Track: Race Day 2003" at Wicker
Park's 1/Quarterly Space. A dual exhibit/Pinewood Derby race, Wanzel
invited some 55 artists to design and assemble their own Pinewood Derby
models from an official Fast Track: Raceday 2003 Pinewood Derby Kit.
Among the cars that will race on the day of show are Geoff Smalley's
bee-striped black- and yellow-hooded, baby-blue hotrod and Huong Ngo's
#12 bare-wood sci-fi racer, an astronaut emblem on the hood, and a
plastic-bubbled Lego "Little People" figure in the driver's seat.
Wanzel also has produced new video, sound, drawings and more that
examine the lives of Ford Motor Company magnate Henry Ford and Boy Scout
founder Lord Baden-Powell. Fast Track: Race Day 2003 shows at 1/Quarterly Space, 1355 North
Milwaukee, (773)252-7780, through January 17.
