A pioneer of modern dance who danced solo for Martha Graham and famously
collaborated with fellow modern master John Cage, Merce Cunningham's
the legendary choreographer who used chance techniques including coin
tosses and computers to determine sequences of movement and whose
dancers learn a work in silence. This two-day performance by the Dance
Center of Columbia College promises to be historic--not only will you be
able to witness a stop on the Merce Cunningham Dance Company's fiftieth
anniversary tour, but the performances take place at the tony new
downtown dance theater. On November 14 at 8pm, Merce Cunnigham Dance
Company performs Program A, "Interscape" (2000) and "Fluid Canvas"
(2002). On November 15 they perform "Pond Way" (1998), "Native
Green" (1985), "How to Kick, Pass, Fall and Run" (1965). Both
programs include a film collage by Merce Cunningham and Charles Atlas,
as well as a pre-performance discussion. Also, this weekend there will
be a three-day symposium, "Conversations on Cunningham," discussing
the life and work of the avant-garde vanguard. See Talks for more
information. Merce Cunningham Dance Company performs November 14-15 at 8pm at the
Joan W. and Irving B. Harris Theater for Music and Dance, 205 East
Randolph, (312)344-8300. $15-$48.
