Tip of the Week
Spectacular Vernacular

Michael Workman

Curated by Chicago artist Ryan Davis, "Spectacular Vernacular" opens this week at the Betty Rymer Gallery at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. The exhibit examines the influence of subcultures on the perception of everyday objects and includes work by Chicago-based artists Brian McCutcheon, Matthew Weddington, Lynn Cazabon and Matt Owens. Very promising is McCutcheon's interrogation of custom auto culture. Included in the exhibit is "Trailer Queen," a modified Weber Grill decked out with hotrod parts, complete with exhaust pipes, auto paint finish and flame-licked detailing.

"Spectacular Vernacular" shows at Betty Rymer Gallery, 280 South Columbus Drive, (312)443-3703, through November 21.
