*The Emperor Jones

Robeson) becomes the ruler of a remote Caribbean island. Based on the
Eugene O'Neill play. 72m. 35mm. $8. Siskel Film Center (312)846-2600,

*Rushmore
(1999, USA) Directed by Wes Anderson. With the critical triumph of
"Rushmore," writer-director Anderson and co-writer Owen Wilson erase
any memories of their tepid debut, "Bottle Rocket." "Rushmore" (the
name of a fictional prep school), told with great self-assurance,
follows the jauntily surreal antics of Max Fischer (newcomer Jason
Schwartzman, a marvel), an overachiever at a New England prep school who
falters when he succumbs to the allure of an older female science
teacher (Olivia Williams). It's all compounded when he befriends a local
millionaire whom he hopes will help him win her affections. Played with
the weariest of world-weariness by Bill Murray, it's a role as close to
perfect as he's ever been. Max is allowed to fail, to learn, and yet
remain Max to the final scene. Music Box (773)871-6604, 3733 N.

marijuana was considered a legitimate creative tool? Two
motorcyclists--Peter Fonda, Dennis Hopper--hit the road in search of the
"real American" at the end of the '60s. Fine photography by Laszlo
Kovacs and a superb performance by Jack Nicholson as a drunken lawyer
leaven the general "hey man" atmosphere. 94m. Music Box (773)871-6604,
