The Fifteenth Onion City Experimental Film Festival plays September 12-14 at Chicago Filmmakers, with New York filmmaker Julie Murray presenting a program of her work. The complete schedule is at www.chicagofilmmakers.org

Fri 12

*Hallelujah

(1929, USA) Directed by King Vidor. An all-black melodrama, one of the first sound films to work largely with exteriors. Vidor's use of space and sound continues to impress. $8. Siskel Film Center (312)846-2600, 164 N. State at Randolph, 6:15.

*Rushmore

(1999, USA) Directed by Wes Anderson. With the critical triumph of "Rushmore," writer-director Anderson and co-writer Owen Wilson erase any memories of their tepid debut, "Bottle Rocket." "Rushmore" (the name of a fictional prep school), told with great self-assurance, follows the jauntily surreal antics of Max Fischer (newcomer Jason Schwartzman, a marvel), an overachiever at a New England prep school who falters when he succumbs to the allure of an older female science teacher (Olivia Williams). It's all compounded when he befriends a local millionaire whom he hopes will help him win her affections. Played with the weariest of world-weariness by Bill Murray, it's a role as close to perfect as he's ever been. Max is allowed to fail, to learn, and yet remain Max to the final scene. Rob Elder introduces. DVD video. International Dinner and a Movie. $35 for dinner and movie; movie free. Dinner: Plaza Club, 130 E. Randolph, 6pm. Movie: Chicago Cultural Center, 78 E. Washington, 8.
