Stoked: The Rise and Fall of Gator

Ray Pride

Helen Stickler's beautifully edited, years-in-the-making documentary is a snapshot of skateboarding culture in the 1980s, shown through the downfall of Mark "Gator" Rogowski, a lean, charismatic goofball who became one of the first commercially exploited professional skaters. Gator had a modicum of talent and not much sense. His success led to overextending himself and, eventually, murder. It's a sad story, but the details of the music, fashions and youth delusions of two decades ago are artfully arrayed and often sweetly laughable. Skate too close to the sun and... Other skate legends like Tony Hawk, Lance Mountain and Steve Caballero are among the interviewees. 82m.

"Stoked" opens Friday.
